Montessori floor bed: how to make the transition stress-free

Transitioning from a bassinet to a toddler bed is a big step, both for the child and for the parents. With a Montessori floor bed, this transition can be smoother, as the child discovers their new space at their own pace, without feeling confined.

The first thing to remember is that you don't have to change everything in one day. Some parents set up the floor bed in the room a few days before the first night, simply to allow the child to explore it. They can read a book there, sit on it, or place their stuffed animals on it. The bed then becomes a familiar element rather than an imposed novelty.

The evening routine also plays an important role. Keeping the same steps as before helps a lot: bath, pajamas, story, cuddle, sleep. Even if the bed changes, the routine remains reassuring. The child understands that bedtime remains the same.

Initially, it's normal for the child to get up more often. The floor bed gives them more freedom, and this freedom requires a little adjustment period. The ideal is to remain calm, gently guide them back to their bed, and consistently repeat the same instruction.

The room should also be safe and simple. Remove fragile objects, accessible wires, and unstable furniture. The calmer the environment, the more the child will understand that their room is a space for rest.

With patience, the Montessori floor bed can become an excellent tool for developing autonomy while maintaining a gentle and reassuring routine.
