Twin or Double Montessori Floor Bed: Which Should You Choose?
Share
In the photo, the double bed looks perfect. But once it’s in the bedroom, will there still be room to open the dresser, put books away and sit on the floor? On the other hand, you might hesitate over a twin bed, wondering whether it will still suit your child a few years from now.
To choose between a twin or double Montessori floor bed, start by thinking about what happens around the bed. The size of the room matters, of course, but so do your everyday routines. Here are some practical ways to find a size that works for your family without taking over the whole room.
Twin or double: what actually changes?
A double bed mainly gives you more width. Don’t assume it will be longer than a twin.
Take two Petit Royaume models: our floor beds without a house frame, with a left- or right-side entrance. Their outside frame dimensions are:
| Frame dimensions | Twin bed | Double bed |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 199 cm | 199 cm |
| Width | 108 cm | 144 cm |
| Height | 38.1 cm | 38.1 cm |
For these models, the double takes up 36 cm more in width, with the same length. In a bedroom, that strip of space can make the difference between a comfortable walkway and having to squeeze sideways around a piece of furniture.
These measurements apply specifically to the twin floor bed without a house frame, with a left/right entrance and the double floor bed without a house frame, with a left/right entrance. Always check the product page for the model you choose, as dimensions can vary between frames.
When a twin bed makes sense
A twin bed is worth considering even if a double would fit. Its narrower frame leaves more room to move around, add a small storage unit or keep some floor space open.
Think about ordinary moments: your child spreads out a puzzle, you kneel down to pick up pyjamas, or a drawer stays open while you choose clothes. These little things help you picture how the room will work.
If your child often plays in their bedroom, that extra space may get used every day. And if you already have a twin mattress, check its measurements and compatibility with the frame before planning another purchase.
When to consider a double bed
A double may suit you if the room has enough width and you like having more space on the bed, perhaps to sit beside your child during their bedtime story.
Before choosing for that reason alone, picture the rest of the room with the bed in place. Is the closet still easy to reach? Does the door open all the way? Can you get to the books without moving a basket?
If an adult will sit on the bed, check the weight limit listed for that model as well. Mattress size alone doesn’t tell you how much the frame can support.
Try the layout in the room before ordering
A tape measure and some painter’s tape can help you picture the result. Test the tape on a small, hidden patch of flooring first.
- Mark out the outside dimensions of the frame, rather than the mattress dimensions.
- Open nearby doors and drawers as you would on a normal day.
- Locate the bed’s entrance and the path leading to it. For a model with a left/right entrance, check the assembly guide to choose the right orientation.
- Leave room for upkeep: changing sheets, vacuuming and lifting the mattress should still be manageable.
Leave the outline in place while you look at the room from a few angles. Sometimes a bed fits perfectly on paper but takes up all the space in front of the dresser.
Think about the mattress and bedding too
Compare everything you’ll need: the frame, a compatible mattress, a mattress protector and sheets. Moving from a twin to a double can mean replacing several items, even when the difference in frame prices seems small.
For the two models featured here, slats are included and the recommended maximum mattress height is 25.4 cm (10 inches). Petit Royaume recommends these beds for children ages 2 and up. Read the full product information and assembly guide before setting up the bed.
Questions to consider before choosing
Is a double bed always the better choice for the future?
Not necessarily. The two models compared here have the same outside length. Choosing the double is mainly about having extra width. The right choice also depends on how much space you want to keep available in the bedroom over time.
Should you choose the biggest bed that fits?
Not always. A bed that leaves room to move around and use the other furniture can make everyday life easier. If fitting a double means removing storage you use every day, a twin is worth another look.
Choose a size that makes everyday life easier
At Petit Royaume, we like bedrooms where furniture fits naturally into family life. A twin bed may be the right choice for keeping a play corner open; a double may suit a more spacious room. What matters is being able to use the bedroom comfortably once the bed is in place.
